Ballycastle Food Tour

A gem of a tour’ according to those who’ve been on it. We wander around Ballycastle, noticing odd little nooks and corners, learning how important this place once was and discovering that, through our food and creativity, it is now (according to the Sunday Times, no less!) the Best Place to Live in Northern Ireland. I agree with them completely - let me show why.

At the sea front, where kings once set sail across the Sea of Moyle, we’ll have an Ulster Fry ‘breakfast stack’ at the Bay Cafe and listen to Stephen and Teresa tell us about soda bread, potato bread, black pudding, and a very secret salsa.

From there, via Boyle’s Deli and a mouthful of Dart Mountain cheese, perhaps some coffee, we walk past a Georgian Manor House, up the Victorian Quay Road and into Thyme and Co where we get to sample scones of mouthwatering deliciousness and seasonal treats like kelp pesto or rhubarb compote.

After talking to Tom and Eimear, we head up the beautifully painted Ann Street to The Central Wine Bar. Today it might be dukka spiced Dexter beef fritters, tomorrow a seafood chowder - always Guinness bread, though.

Our next stop tests our walking metal as we have to go...across the street! O’Connor’s Bar tantalises us with a daily special, perhaps mackerel with triple cooked chips, perhaps sea bass with a chorizo cream. Chris lets us know what it will be only when we’ve arrived. Whatever our seasonal treat is, it’s washed down with a glass of Rathlin Red Ale - brewed locally to perfectly compliment local foods. What could be better?

Ballycastle Museum is open to all so we take a wee quick look inside - there’s a secret only you will know thereafter.

We’ll finish at Ursa Minor with two of the most delightful , passionate young people you’ll meet. Sourdough, patisserie, seasonal, tasty and community are their loves.

I love this town; after you’ve walked, talked and eaten with me, I know you will too.
